From the original sculpture to the almost finished replica
( part 1 – 3 have been published in my post of december 2011)
(part 4)
In the meantime the first coat of silicone HE has been applied up to a thickness of ca 3 mm. This type of silicone rubber is a high-performance casting paste with an extreme stretching ability and elasticity, soft and with an excellent tensile strength.
It is specially used to reproduce models with extensive background details.
As soon as the silicone is mixed with the hardener it has to be quickly applied by brush covering the model with a thin layer. After the vulcanization this procedure has to be repeated various times until the desired thickness of the mould has been achieved.
The next step is the application of silicone NV. The characteristics of this type are a low viscosity with a high stretching ability, but a medium elasticity. Once hardened it adds some stability to the still very soft mould.
The layers have to be built up to a thickness of 10-12 mm, a very work-and time-intensive procedure...
